When walking your dog, always take special dog excrement bags with you. You will need these to pick up your dog's excrement from the ground and dispose of it. As a dog owner, you are obliged to do this. You can buy dog excrement bags in pet shops or collect them at the public rubbish bins.

A lot of waste is also produced day after day in the kitchen. You can compost some of this waste. This means that the waste is converted into carbon dioxide, water and humus by a biological process. The compost or the green waste disposal includes:
-
Waste from fruit and vegetables
-
Food leftovers (also meat and fish)
-
Rotten fruits and vegetables
-
Coffee grounds, tea (with bag, but without packaging)
-
Crushed egg shells
-
Cut flowers and potted plants
If you do not have a compost heap, simply use the green waste container in your municipality for disposal.

Hazardous waste is defined as waste that has to be disposed of in a special manner because of its toxicity or other properties. It is essential to note that hazardous waste should never be disposed of in the waste sack or in the sewage system.
The most important household hazardous waste includes:
-
Paints, varnishes, adhesives, acids, alkalis, descaling agents
-
Solvents, brush cleaners, thinners, methylated sprays
-
Medications
-
Mercury, thermometers with mercury
-
Chemicals, poisons, bleach
-
Spray cans, compressed gas cartridges
-
Pesticides, wood preservatives
-
Weed killers, fertilizers
-
Other substances unknown to you
The following principle applies to this waste: you can dispose of the resulting hazardous waste where you purchased the products. Manufacturers and retailers are obliged by law to take back this waste.
It is also possible to dispose of this waste in the hazardous waste mobile vehicle. You can find the dates when the mobile hazardous waste collection vehicle is parked in the community centre in the waste calendar.

There are many types of waste that do not belong in the waste sack. These include:
-
Batteries, rechargeable batteries and button cells
-
Coffee capsules (Nespresso and other manufacturers)
-
Fluorescent tubes, discharge lamps
-
Energy-saving lamps
-
Electrical and electronic equipment
-
Hazardous waste
Return this waste to the stores where you purchased the products for disposal.

If your house has a waste container, throw the well-tied waste sack into it. Whether this is only permitted at certain times can be read in the house rules or from the caretaker.
If you do not have a waste container, take the well-tied waste bag to the collection point of your house or living quarters. However, this is only permitted on the day of collection and only at certain times. The corresponding rules can be found in the Kloten waste calendar.
There are good reasons for these regulations: first, it does not look particularly inviting if there are mountains of rubbish sacks everywhere along the road. Another reason is that animals such as foxes, martens, crows and cats like to tear up the rubbish bags lying around at night and plunder the contents.

The more waste you dispose of separately, the more you can save and protect our environment. The following waste must be disposed of separately:

-
Domestic goods
-
Lamps, lights
-
Pits goods: mineral waste such as flower pots/construction waste
-
Plastic
-
Tyres, wheel rims
-
Cork pin
-
Nespresso capsules
-
Polystyrene
-
PET
-
Waste paper
-
Cardboard
-
Bottles and jars (waste glass)
-
Green waste (compostable garden and kitchen waste)
-
Waste oil (edible oils and mineral oils)
-
Textiles and footwear
-
Metals
-
Aluminium and cans (tin metal)
-
Oversized goods
You will find a clear information sheet on this topic here.
In the municipality of Kloten, there are different collection points for recyclable materials (waste glass, aluminium + cans, waste oil, textiles). You can find out where they are located and which recyclables you can dispose of on the website.
You should also dispose of PET beverage bottles and plastic bottles (e.g. milk bottles) separately. Empty bottles can be recycled thanks to a special process for the production of new bottles or plastic bottles. There are no public collection points for this. However, you can return the bottles to the shops where you bought them.

Every day, people produce countless tonnes of waste. The disposal and destruction (recycling) of this waste is a complex matter. Employees of a waste disposal company are required to collect the waste from your doorstep; special refuse collection vehicles transport the waste to the incineration plants, where it is then destroyed. All this causes high costs, which is why the municipality charges a fee for waste bags.
As in most places, the "polluter pays" principle applies in your municipality. This means that the more waste you produce, the more you have to pay for it. Or vice versa: if you dispose of the waste separately, you will be rewarded because you need to buy fewer waste bags and can therefore save money.
And another important advantage: the waste that is disposed of separately (recyclable materials) can be recycled to a large extent. They thus also contribute to the protection of the environment and natural resources. Incidentally, Switzerland is one of the world's leaders in recycling (reusing raw materials that have already been used).
Everything you need to know about waste and disposal can be found here.
Federal Office for the Environment: the waste guide provides information on the disposal of various types of waste.

If you want to dispose of your household waste, you must buy and use the official waste bags or waste labels from Kloten. Only waste in the official waste bags in sizes 17 l, 35 l, 60 l and 110 l is collected.
Official rubbish bags and rubbish labels are available in all local grocery stores and at the post office.
For the disposal of bulky goods - such as mattresses, furniture or carpets - you also need waste stamps. Only burnable waste (no metal, electrical devices or mineral waste such as flower pots/construction waste) is collected.
Gebühren Kehricht-/ Grüngut Entsorgung
The incineration of waste outdoors is prohibited in Switzerland.
